Want Some Genetically Engineered Meat?
Organic food. Farm fresh. Natural. Most of us would agree that food delivered with a minimum of human tampering is the healthiest way to go. Yet the Food and Drug Administration announced today that it is working to approve genetically engineered animals as food — and they won’t even label it as such!
Here’s a link to the full news report.
In a few months, you could walk into a grocery store and buy some chicken/rat meat. Or beef/pork. Come to think of it, how would Jewish or Muslim people who don’t eat pork even know if it’s not labeled as such?
Sure, the FDA says the food will be “safe for human consumption” but they’ve been wrong before. To quote from my own book:
“Just because the FDA approves the use of a chemical additive doesn’t mean it’s safe (Saccharine anyone? How about some Fen-phen?)”
I was writing about the dangers of Aspeatame in that passage but the same concept applies here. The government keeps tampering with our food supply and assuring us that chemically engineered and now genetically engineered food is safe and even preferable to food grown naturally in the ground or on the farm.
I don’t know about you, but if the FDA allows genetically engineered meat to enter our restaurants and grocery stores without being labeled as such then I may just become a vegetarian again. Am I overreacting? Does this concept bother you?
