In terms of individual songs, I mostly listen to contemporary chill out and electronica music. If this were a list of top 10 songs it would be dramatically different. This however is a list of albums. Listening to entire albums has practically become a thing of the past. It’s an entirely different experience than listening to a random selection of songs. With the albums on this list, it’s worth taking the time to listen to them straight through. The music is cohesive and more than the sum of it’s parts. In other words, you’ll feel more deeply moved by having listened to the entire album than by merely sampling a song or two.

I’m making this list public in the hopes that it will turn some people on to the music I love. I’m no audiophile, but years of recording studio voice overs and performing live on a mic every night has definitely made me very auditorially inclined. You may not agree with every selection, but these are all albums that I’ve listened to hundreds of times and that never get old. So here they are, the Top 10 Albums according to me:

The Beastie Boys “The In Sound From Way Out”

I have every album the Beastie Boys ever put out and this is simply their best by far. Every track a winner. Even if you don’t like the Beastie Boys, you will like this album. If you don’t, then ignore the rest of this list, you have no taste.

Sade “The Best of Sade”

The ultimate love songs. This is the album I used to seduce my wife with. Enough said.

Maxwell “Urban Hang Suite”

This is the album I would’ve used to seduce my wife with if I’d known it had existed at the time.

Diana Krall “The Look Of Love”

The perfect way to set the mood for a romantic evening. Hey, I’m sensing a theme here!

Steely Dan “Gaucho”

This album has been with me since I was about 10. Never gets old. It may not have much of a cool factor, but if you give it a chance it’ll grow on you.

Miles Davis “Kind Of Blue”

This was my favorite album in college and it stands the test of time.

 Herbie Hancock “Headhunters”

Nothing else like it. You may love it or hate it but it’s definitely worth a listen or three.

The Brand New Heavies “Brother Sister”

This music just makes me happy. I put it in the same class as Jill Scott’s “The Way”.

Tangerine Dream “Underwater Sunlight”

Been listening to this album since high school. Basically my original hypnotic / meditation music.

The Beatles “Abbey Road”

This CD is always in my convertible and played on continuous loop with the top down while speeding along winding roads in the summertime. Always has been. Always will be.

The soundtrack of electronica music I’ve compiled for my “Beyond Belief” stage show.

OK, so this isn’t really an album, but if I had the rights to sell it after my show I would. I hear this music almost every day and never get tired of it. It’s the sonic expression of the mood I’d like my mind reading show to evoke. As one reviewer put it, “Spooky-Cool”. The next time you see me live, listen for the music in the background, and let me know after the show if it moved you. It took me over a year to compile and I absolutely love it! Big thanks to Pandora’s Music Genome Project for making this compilation possible.

This book, written in 1902, is pretty much responsible for the creation of the entire personal development industry. It’s based on the biblical verse from the Book of Proverbs chapter 23 verse 7, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”.

Most personal development books out there today are at least in part based on this classic, but little known work. It’s all about the power of our thinking to shape our lives. The concept that thoughts are things and we become what we think about.

Anyway, they’ve published a followup piece where the reporter interviewed me about hypnosis, life on the road, and “the future”. I ended up revealing quite a bit and think the piece came out great. Thanks to Mike Kamo for an excellent interview.

Here’s an excerpt from the article where I discuss the difference between hypnosis and mentalism:

“Q: Could you explain the difference between the mentalist and hypnosis portions of your show?

A: With the mentalism, everyone is awake. I’m applying the same principles [body language, influence, persuasion] and thought projection, while picking up on people’s emotional states using intuition- a variety of techniques that are all basically rooted in psychology and listening on a deep level- in order to tell people and get them to think of the things that I am projecting. That’s the mentalism- everyone’s awake, but I’m using sort of hypnotic procedures in their awake state in order to get that effect. I’m influencing them to make certain decisions and perceive certain things.

When the hypnosis portion of the show takes place, I’m obviously taking volunteers from the audience and actually putting them under trance, which is also called “theta state,” which is a brain wave state that basically means you’re in a heightened state of sensitivity to suggestion. So when I suggest something in that state, you respond to though it’s real- your body believes it’s real. You’re hallucinating that it’s real, and that’s what hypnosis is.”

Cruise Ship Speaker Joshua Seth - Getting Lost in Istanbul

As soon as I looked out of my cabin window this morning I knew that this port would finally provide the taste of old Europe that I’d yet to find on this voyage. Mosques and minarets dotted the landscape and bright red flags with the Muslin moon and star snapped briskly in the sea breeze. It was about 90 degrees already and it was only 8am.

The first stop of the day was at the Hippodrome, the site of chariot races in old Constantanople that attracted crowds of 100,000 people. The Egyptian obelisk that still stands at it’s center is over 3,500 years old and I suddenly realized that I’d never before seen anything older than a few hundreds years that wasn’t locked up behind glass in a museum. This massive sculpture was standing right out in the open, just steps away from the equally impressive Blue Mosque.

Men are forbidden to enter mosques with their knees exposed in Turkey and this is why I was now sweltering uncomfortably in my jeans as the temperature topped 100 degrees. It was worth it though, as again I’d never seen anything like it, not just in terms of size and age but in detailed adornment too. I took a great many pictures of the same domes and columns, trying to stitch together some semblance of the scope of the place.

Afterwards I went to a rug making demonstration which was actually quite a bit more interesting than I’d anticipated, and not just because the place was air conditioned! Mustachioed men kept throwing rugs out onto the floor, one after another, bam bam bam, for about 45 minutes, saying as each one unrolled “This rug took 4 years to make. It’s silk on silk. All hand woven”. Bam! “This one took 5 years to make. It has over 600 stitches per square inch and is over 100 years old.” Bam! And they’d throw another one on top of that until there were dozens of carpets piled all over each other, covering the floor completely.

Finally I entered the Grand Bazaar, home to over 7,000 shops and easily twice that many merchants trying to aggressively coerce passersby into sampling their wares. I used various accents and attitudes with the vendors and had a great time pretending to be from different parts of the world. I even posed as a Turk several times and tried to outsell the shop’s vendor, enticing the tourists it with Borat like enthusiasm. It was great fun. Eventually I just dropped my Turkish accent and did a flat out Borat impersonation. I’m sure the Turks don’t know who Borat is but they loved it just the same and invited me back behind the counter for green apple tea and Turkish delights.

I got lost in the bazaar for hours and picked up a few oddities, like a bookmark made of woven Turkish carpet and a bunch of “evil eyes”. When it was time to go back to the ship, it took me nearly half an hour to figure a way out of the bazaar and back to the street where I’d started! I’d gotten entirely turned around in the never-ending maze of merchants and only managed to find my way back again because I’d noticed the particular design on the ceiling where I’d entered.

It was an exciting adventure! I highly recommend getting lost every once in a while. It’s a great way to find yourself
