Summer Weight Loss Tips

It’s swimsuit season and chances are if you’re like most people your old New Year’s Resolution is about to become your new summer weight loss program. Oops!

Here are 3 simple things you can do today to start losing weight this summer:

1. Summer is a great time to get outdoors and move your body. Biking, hiking, swimming, pretty much anything that raises your heart rate for at least 20 minutes a day will do the trick. This will increase your metabolism and help you to burn calories faster.

2. Fresh fruits and vegetables are plentiful during the summer months. Instead of reaching for a that bag of junk food, why not mix up a bowl full of berries instead? Produce is in season, tastes great, and is full of low calorie nutrients your body needs.

3. Take some time to relax. The link between stress and weight gain is well documented. Take 20 minutes in the morning to practice self-hypnosis. Not only will you feel better for the rest of the day but your appetite will go down right along with your stress levels.

Why Europeans Aren’t Fat

By Joshua Seth | June 23, 2008

What we see around us everyday we come to view as normal. Take on a new perspective and all that changes. This is why travel used to be considered an essential part of education.

I have been performing my hypnosis show on a cruise ship in Europe this past week. It has been awesome (honestly, I can hardly believe I get paid to do this stuff!). I’ve seen many wonders of the ancient world (the Colosseum in Rome, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the ruins of Pompeii). And everywhere I go there is sumptuous local food to sample (gelato in Monaco, grilled octopus in Greece, Pizza in Naples). And everything tastes different than it does in America.

Even the familiar foods taste different. Pizza tastes different, The crusts are thinner and the sauces less sweet. There are no fast food restaurants that I have seen. Instead they have little shops open to the street that have freshly prepared sandwiches and baguettes behind glass. Not burgers and fries. In general, the foods are served in smaller portions, are less sugary, and are more commonly made from locally grown ingredients. They are NOT of full of additives and preservatives and chemicals. They are simple, fresh, and local. Perhaps it’s no small coincidence that I have seen very few overweight Europeans in these areas.

Undoubtably, the fact that they get outside and walk more has something to do with this as well. You don’t see everyone staring at TVs or laptop screens or plugged into cell phones and iPods. They are actually walking around and talking with one another. But I digress.

Many places I’ve been to in the world have a leaner, fitter population than the United States. I notice this every time I’m in Australia and New Zealand too. I think we’re slowly killing ourselves in the States with the foods we eat and the lifestyles we lead. Personally I’d rather pay a bit more for my food and only eat fresh food  than consume all the chemicals that most of our prepackaged foods now contain.

One hundred twenty million Americans are now considered obese (according to the government’s own statistics). That’s a third of our population. Many of these people will develop other disease as a result of this condition, like diabetes, heart disease, and certain kinds of cancer. This is not the case in Europe and most of the rest of the world. We’re doing this to ourselves. It’s time to stop this madness and do something about it.

What you see around you isn’t normal, it’s the sad result of the disconnection of our minds from our bodies and our bodies from the land on which we live. We’ve been trained to think that following diets and counting calories are the roadmaps to fitness and good health. It’s much simpler than that.

Visit the Greek Isles or Cote d’Azur in France and you’ll see that  you can be absolutely perfectly satisfied with a freshly baked baguette, some olive oil, herbs, and tomatoes picked from from the garden out back, with perhaps a a small bit of protein and a single glass of red wine. Consume slowly with a beautiful companion and enjoy while overlooking the sea on a sun drenched afternoon.

No rules. Just life as it was meant to be lived. Simple, satisfying, and free.

Individuals Fighting Obesity

By Joshua Seth | June 11, 2008

If you think it’s hard to lose those last 7 pounds, imagine if you had to lose 700! That’s what Manuel Urib is attempting to do and he’s well on his way to succeeding. Two years ago he weighed 1,235 pounds and held the Guinness Record for heaviest person.

He says that he gained the weight from eating junk food and soft drinks nonstop when he lived in the United Stated for a few years back in the late ’80s.

Now he’s been watching what he eats and has been steadily losing weight for the past 2 years. He’s already lost about 550 pounds!
550 pounds. Wow.

If my girlfriend had 4 twin sisters (now there’s a thought!) the equivalent of all 5 of them would have been in this guy’s belly before he started slimming down!

He still can’t get out of bed or move around. Reminds me of the mother character in the movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. His next big goal is to be able to stand up at his wedding next year.

So the next time you feel like losing weight is too hard, think of Manuel. Can you get out of bed in the morning? Can you walk a little more each day? Manuel can’t and he’s already lost more than your entire body weight simply by sticking to his goal and achieving it bit by bit over time. If he can succeed in his weight loss goals, you can too.

Last Minute Air Travel Tips

By Joshua Seth | June 10, 2008

My girlfriend and I are flying to Greece tomorrow to do a show and then on to Italy and all I can say is… I’m sure glad someone else is paying for the tickets.

Did you know that American Airlines (the Nation’s largest commercial airline) is about to start charging $15 to check your FIRST bag after June 15th? Look for the other airlines to follow suit. They have to do something to offset the rising costs of jet fuel.

A few months ago I wrote an article about how to pack for your next trip without checking any luggage. At the time many airlines had just started charging $25 for checking a second bag. I’m thinking about how these kinds of additional fees will impact a family going on vacation (mom, dad, and 3 kids could rack up $200 in luggage charges) or a company planning an incentive program or trade show. This kind of stealth inflation can actually have a much greater impact on the overall economy than the meager dollar amounts would suggest. Hidden fees are like regressive taxes that create inflation without appearing to do so.

American also announced that they will be raising fares by another $20 (the 17th time they’ve done this since the start of the year!) and cutting domestic flight capacity in the US by over 10% by the end of the year. Look for fewer empty seats, less room in overhead storage compartments, more connections, and longer delays when flying. Fewer flight options will also result in higher ticketing prices (supply and demand).

The takeaway?

If you have any upcoming trips or summer vacations planned and can purchase the tickets before June 15th you’ll save yourself both time and money.

Weight Loss Success Stories

By Joshua Seth | June 5, 2008

Do You Have Your Own Weight Loss Success Story?

One of the best things about being a hypnotist and life coach is that I know I’m making a positive difference in people’s lives. Hardly a day goes by without me getting an email from somebody who’s been to one of my seminars or listened to my self hypnosis CDs and has a great story to share.  It really is a great feeling to get that feedback and know that I’ve helped to change someone’s life.

Today something very unusual happened… I got a letter.
I mean a real letter, with a stamp and a signature and everything.

It was from a woman who had attended one of my weight loss hypnosis seminars
and was writing to tell me about her weight loss success story.

She wrote:

“We attended a session of yours on weight loss on May 14th, 2008…
I already am amazed at how much this is helping. I have been heavy all my life  However, In just this short time I have lost several lbs. below my lowest (weight) in many years and feel well, less stressed in every way and very grateful. Thank you.”

- Betsy W. (last name withheld until she gives me permission to publish it)

Now, you may have thought that the unusual part about this story is that she lost
the weight so quickly (it’s only been 3 weeks). Actually, I’ve found that to be pretty typical from the feedback I’ve gotten. As I say in my seminars and on my hypnosis
CDs
, it takes 21 days to make habit changes permanent. So her eating habits and
subsequent weight loss is following this pattern precisely.

Or perhaps you thought that what’s so unusual about this story is that it came to me in the form of an actual letter. I have to admit, that is rare these days. The first thought that ran through my mind was that it was full of Anthrax or something! It was a personal sized envelope and didn’t look like a wedding invitation so I really didn’t know what to make of it.

Anyone reading this who owns a business or is into marketing should take note of how much impact this simple authentic letter had on me. If you want to get through to people in this high tech age it might be a good idea to use a little low tech letter. But I digress…

Here’s what I thought was most unusual about this letter from Betsy… she mentions in it that she’s 67 years old! The myth is that people get set in their ways and as they get older it becomes harder to change. Betsy proves that’s a bunch of BS.
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!

I hear people all the time making excuses about why they won’t come to one of my seminars or at least get the hypnosis CDs. They usually say something like “But I’ve always had this weight issue” or “I’d like to lose weight but it’s too difficult”.

Give me  break. If a 67 year old can do it, you can too. Issues are as big or as small as we allow them to be. So stop looking for reasons why and start looking for solutions. When we decide to take responsibility for the shape we’re in and commit to doing something about it we can overcome the greatest of odds.
